The Program
The Mauritian Community Broadcasting Group is one of 60 ethnic groups broadcasting in their own language on radio 3ZZZ. Its first broadcast went to air on 24 June 1989. In those days, the program had an hour a week. In 1992, the MCBG was granted a second hour and continues to present a 2-hour program weekly.
The Mauritian program which is a magazine-style program can be heard every Saturday from noon to 2 pm on 92.3 FM, broadcasting essentially in French and in Creole with some English. With a focus on the community, the program includes news from Mauritius, interviews, music including segas and French songs, community reports, cultural and historical segments, requests and quizzes and also covers events of significance such as Republic Day of Mauritius, Australia Day, La Faya, etc. It is the voice of the Mauritian community of Melbourne and acts as a link between Mauritians in Victoria with compatriots living in other parts of the globe.
The program is the responsibility of a committee of 7, elected every 2 years by the financial members. The current convenor is Nella Roussel. The 14-member broadcast team is made up entirely of volunteers who work in teams of 4 or 5 each Saturday to prepare and present programs, carry out interviews, operate the panel or answer the phone on a rostered basis.
